Over the past two years, the Western District Conference (WDC) Ministerial Leadership Commission (MLC) and Executive Board have been discerning a path toward meaningful restoration and healing of relationships, in recognition of the past exclusion of LGBTQIA ministers in our conference.

We do this in response to Jesus’ call for us to love one another, and to seek forgiveness and reconciliation when we hurt one another.

This consideration also follows the MLC’s decision in 2022 to affirm ministerial credentialing for all qualified candidates regardless of sexual orientation or marital status, and the Resolution on Repentance and Transformation approved by Mennonite Church USA delegates in 2022.

As part of this work, the MLC reached out last year to John Linscheid, a former pastor in WDC. John had been Licensed Toward Ordination in WDC after beginning in 1980 as pastor at Lawrence Mennonite Fellowship (now Peace Mennonite Church) in Lawrence, KS, a new church plant being subsidized by WDC. However, in 1984 after learning that John was gay, the WDC Ministerial Committee rescinded his ministerial credential and the WDC Home Missions Committee decided to suspend financial subsidy for Lawrence Mennonite Fellowship if John continued as pastor. As a result, the congregation and John discerned that he would step down from his pastoral role.

Recognizing the harm and broken relationships that these actions by WDC caused in the past, the MLC entered into dialogue with John to explore a path toward restoration and healing. The MLC also contacted Peace Mennonite Church leaders, to inform them of the conversations with John and to acknowledge how WDC’s actions had impacted the congregation. In consultation with John and with Peace Mennonite Church leaders, the MLC and Executive Board are planning a public service to offer an official apology from WDC to John, and to present an honorary ministerial credential to him as affirmation of his ministry calling and gifts.

The service will take place on Sunday, May 11, at 4 pm Central Time, in-person at Peace Mennonite Church, 615 Lincoln Street, in Lawrence, KS, and also on Zoom. All are invited to a fellowship meal hosted by Peace Mennonite Church following the service.

Durante los últimos dos años, la Comisión de Liderazgo Ministerial (MLC por sus siglas en ingles) y la Junta Ejecutiva de la Conferencia Western District (WDC) han estado discerniendo un camino hacia la restauración significativa y la sanación de las relaciones, en reconocimiento de la exclusión pasada de los ministros LGBTQIA en nuestra conferencia.

Hacemos esto en respuesta al llamado de Jesús para que nos amemos unos a otros y busquemos el perdón y la reconciliación cuando nos lastimamos unos a otros.

Esta consideración también sigue a la decisión del MLC en 2022 de afirmar la acreditación ministerial para todos los candidatos calificados, independientemente de su orientación sexual o estado civil, y la Resolución sobre Arrepentimiento y Transformación aprobada por los delegados de la Iglesia Menonita USA en 2022.

Como parte de este trabajo, el MLC se acercó el año pasado a John Linscheid, un ex pastor de WDC.
