On May 3 worship leaders, pastors, parents and teachers from over 25 WDC congregations gathered at First Mennonite Church (Newton, KS) and online for the launch event for Kids Meet Christ (KMC), WDC’s new grant-funded initiative supporting congregations to reimagine worship to better engage children. At the launch event, we worshiped together, we explored shared challenges and new possibilities for intergenerational worship, and we learned about congregational resources available through KMC. This is one way that WDC is responding to an important theme in our conference-wide Listening Process, where many congregations seek more effective ways to nurture the faith of children and young families.
In the midst of many heavy issues that the church is addressing these days, it was a delight to sense the spirit of energy, purpose, joy and – yes, even fun! – among those attending the KMC launch on May 3. It seemed that we were tasting the life and energy that comes in responding to Jesus’ invitation, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these…” (Matthew 19:13-15).
As WDC congregations participate in the KMC program over the next several years, I wonder how we as intergenerational communities will encounter the kingdom of heaven in our worship and congregational life. What new insights into scripture might we learn? Might we be willing to explore new questions? What fresh perspectives might we discover? How might we gain a deeper sense of belonging and trust within the body of Christ? What new intergenerational relationships might emerge to nurture faith? Where will we be challenged and surprised by the Spirit’s movement? Let’s follow Jesus’ invitation, in anticipation of how the kingdom of God will be revealed among us!

¡Que vengan los niños y adoremos!
El 3 de mayo, líderes de culto, pastores, padres y maestros de más de 25 congregaciones de WDC se reunieron en la Iglesia First Mennonite (Newton, KS) y en línea para el evento de lanzamiento de Kids Meet Christ (KMC), la nueva iniciativa financiada por subvenciones de WDC que apoya a las congregaciones a reimaginar el culto para involucrar mejor a los niños. A medida que las congregaciones de WDC participen en el programa KMC durante los próximos años, me pregunto cómo nosotros, como comunidades intergeneracionales, encontraremos el reino de los cielos en nuestro culto y vida congregacional. ¿Qué nuevas perspectivas de las Escrituras podríamos aprender? ¿Estaríamos dispuestos a explorar nuevas preguntas? ¿Qué nuevas perspectivas podríamos descubrir? ¿Cómo podríamos obtener un sentido más profundo de pertenencia y confianza dentro del cuerpo de Cristo? ¿Qué nuevas relaciones intergeneracionales podrían surgir para nutrir la fe? ¿Dónde seremos desafiados y sorprendidos por el movimiento del Espíritu? ¡Sigamos la invitación de Jesús, en anticipación de cómo se revelará el reino de Dios entre nosotros!
