There’s a beautiful poem by Julia Donaldson entitled “I Opened a Book” that talks about the wonderful adventures taken when we open a book, “I’ve fought with a dragon, dined with a king and dived in a bottomless ocean. I opened a book and made some friends. I shared their tears and laughter and followed their road with its bumps and bends.” Then when we’re done with the story, we return to our own homes, and chairs, yet we are changed. We are changed because now we “have a book inside [me].” 

My dear aunt, a true bibliophile, shared this poem with me and it captivated me. Besides education, books provide an escape, an adventure, they challenge our thinking and assumptions, and become a part of us.  

At the Resource Library, we have a wide variety of books that can become a part of you.  Books can help you explore and experience new things, escape, or examine your assumptions.  Best of all, books can help you grow in faith.  A collection that holds a special place in my heart is the adult fiction section (of course we have picture books, children’s and young adult fiction as well!)  Here are a few new fiction titles that will provide an opportunity to experience different times, places, and ideas as their Christian characters learn and grow.

  • The wish book Christmas by Lynn Austin      A nostalgic and endearing holiday story that reminds us that sometimes, the most meaningful gifts are the ones we least expect and don’t deserve.
  • Roots of wood and stone by Amanda Wen     Abandoned at birth, her own origins a mystery, historical museum curator Sloane Kelley has dedicated her life to preserving Wichita’s past. When a donor drops off a dusty old satchel, she doesn’t expect much from the common artifact…but the 19th-century diary she finds inside definitely piques her interest.
  • The nature of small birds by Susie Finkbeiner     In 1975, three thousand children were airlifted out of Saigon to be adopted into Western homes. When one of those children announces her plans to return to Vietnam to find her birth mother, her loving adopted family is suddenly thrown back to the events surrounding her unconventional arrival in their lives.

Cuando los Libros se Vuelven Parte de Nosotros

Hay un hermoso poema de Julia Donaldson titulado “Abrí un libro” que habla de las maravillosas aventuras que se viven cuando abrimos un libro: “Luché con un dragón, cené con un rey y me sumergí en un océano sin fondo. Abrí un libro e hice algunos amigos. Compartí sus lágrimas y risas y seguí su camino con sus hoyos y curvas”. Luego, cuando terminamos con la historia, regresamos a nuestros propios hogares y donde estaba sentada, pero estamos cambiados. Estamos cambiados porque ahora “tenemos un libro dentro [dentro de mí]”.

Mi querida tía, una verdadera bibliófila, compartió conmigo este poema y me cautivó. Además de la educación, los libros brindan un escape, una aventura, desafían nuestro pensamiento y suposiciones, y se vuelven parte de nosotros.

En la Biblioteca de Recursos, tenemos una amplia variedad de libros que pueden convertirse en parte de usted. Los libros pueden ayudarlo a explorar y experimentar cosas nuevas, escapar o examinar sus suposiciones. Lo mejor de todo es que los libros pueden ayudarle a crecer en la fe. Una colección que ocupa un lugar especial en mi corazón es la sección de ficción para adultos (¡por supuesto que también tenemos libros ilustrados, ficción para niños y jóvenes adultos!) Aquí hay algunos títulos nuevos de ficción que brindarán la oportunidad de experimentar diferentes tiempos, lugares, e ideas a medida que su carácter cristiano aprende y crece.
