April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. Child abuse prevention in church is crucial. Our congregations are intended to be welcoming places. At the same time, we must keep children, youth, and vulnerable adults safe from those who would try to harm them. The best way to do this is to have best practices in place that everyone knows and follows. Or as Marlene Bogard noted in the recent MC USA Safe Church webinar, “The best way to ward off [would-be] molesters is to develop a responsibly attentive environment that puts the molester at risk [of discovery], rather than the children.”
Each April would be a great time to ask your Christian Education Team (or whoever is responsible for safety oversight) to review your church’s Safe Church Abuse Prevention Policy. Discuss any questions or concerns that have come up in the past year. What additions or edits should you make to your safety policy to address these issues? Are you hosting annual abuse prevention and safety trainings? If not, we encourage you to begin this important way to keep abuse prevention practices in front of your congregation.
