Advent has begun; Christmas parties and programs, musical events and rehearsals, shopping, wrapping, and baking fill the calendar, our time, and mental capacity. We can be so busy with Christmas activities that sometimes we have little room for Christ.
A few nights ago, our family read the gorgeous picture book Holy night and little star: A story for Christmas by Mitali Perkins and illustrated by Khoa Le. It’s a beautifully different Christmas story that emboldens us to act with courage when we accept God’s invitations. One of the most powerful parts for me is when Little Star looks into the baby’s eyes and sees “Maker”. She recognizes that Jesus is the very God she knows so well. I find myself marveling over the reminder that the babe we are waiting to welcome is our powerful Creator God. What does it mean to stop and rest and truly be in Christ’s presence?
Advent is a period of waiting and an invitation to rest before the manager–to spend time in God’s presence. I am reminded of the beautiful hymn Come Away from Rush and Hurry (VT 9). Come away from rush and hurry to the stillness of God’s peace […] Come away from noise and clamor, life’s demands and frenzied pace. In this Advent season, we all are extended holy invitations to act with courage. For some, the invitation may be to slow down, it may be to spend time in adoration, it may be to speak truth to the world like Little Star, it may be to spend time in expectant waiting rather than jumping straight to Christmas celebrations, and it may be to embrace the stillness of God’s peace. May you courageously hear and accept God’s invitation this Advent season.

Hace unas noches, nuestra familia leyó el precioso libro ilustrado Noche santa y pequeña estrella: Una historia para la Navidad (Holy night and little star: A story for Christmas) por Mitali Perkins e ilustrado por Khoa Le. Es una historia navideña bellamente diferente que nos anima a actuar con valentía cuando aceptamos las invitaciones de Dios. Una de las partes más impactantes para mí es cuando Little Star mira a los ojos del bebé y ve al “Creador”. Ella reconoce que Jesús es el mismo Dios que ella conoce tan bien. Me sorprendo maravillándome al recordar que el bebé que esperamos recibir es nuestro poderoso Dios Creador. ¿Qué significa detenerse, descansar y estar realmente en la presencia de Cristo?
El Adviento es un periodo de espera y una invitación para descansar ante el pesebre—a pasar tiempo en presencia de Dios. Aléjate de la prisa y apresúrate hacia la quietud de la paz de Dios […] Aléjate del ruido y el bullicio, de las exigencias de la vida y del ritmo frenético. En esta temporada de Adviento, todos recibimos la santa invitaciones de actuar con valentía. Para algunos, la invitación puede ser ir más despacio, puede ser pasar tiempo en adoración, puede ser decir la verdad al mundo como Little Star, puede ser pasar tiempo esperando expectante en vez de saltar directamente a las celebraciones navideñas, y puede ser abrazar la quietud de la paz de Dios. Que escuche y acepte valientemente la invitación de Dios en esta temporada de Adviento.
