The Mennonite Church USA Special Delegate Assembly is over, and decisions have been made. What has changed? What does it mean for my conference, my congregation and me? What opportunities are there for us to live into our Renewed Commitments to “follow Jesus, witness to God’s peace and experience the transformation of the Holy Spirit”?

Here in Western District Conference, our upcoming Annual Delegate Assembly (July 29-31) will also be an opportunity to discuss implications of the MC USA assembly within WDC and our congregations.

In the meantime, I also continue to reflect on the significance of the MC USA special assembly.

It was an opportunity to practice honest conversation, intentional listening skills, compassion and healthy conflict, and emotional awareness in the presence of diverse experiences and perspectives represented in the delegate gathering. This experience is an invitation to the whole church – all congregations – to nurture these spiritual practices going forward. Diversity is part of being the church together; the way we engage conflict and practice “life together” in the midst of our differences is a key part of our witness as followers of Jesus.  

The special assembly also highlighted the importance of addressing issues of power, vulnerability and safety, and belonging in the body of Christ. The resolutions processed by delegates confessed harm that has been done to members of the LGBTQ+ community in the past and committed to honor them in the future; promoted accessibility in the church for persons with disabilities; and called us to work towards racial and economic justice within the criminal legal system. These are important steps toward participating more fully in God’s mission of shalom in the world, as we struggle together to embody justice and wholeness in our own lives and congregations.

Finally, at the assembly I observed that a significant number of youth and young adults were among the delegates participating in table conversations and sharing their comments and questions. I celebrate their presence! This is a call to embrace their leadership, wisdom and creative ideas, so that they might be recognized as the church of today – and be empowered to shape the church of the future.  

May the Holy Spirit guide each congregation in WDC, as we continue to discern these opportunities to join God’s ongoing work among us and in the world.

¿Ahora Qué?

La Asamblea de Delegados Especiales de la Iglesia Menonita USA (MC USA) ha terminado y se han tomado decisiones. ¿Qué ha cambiado? ¿Qué significa para mi conferencia, mi congregación y para mí? ¿Qué oportunidades hay para que vivamos en nuestros Compromisos Renovados para “seguir a Jesús, dar testimonio de la paz de Dios y experimentar la transformación del Espíritu Santo”?

Aquí en la Conferencia de Western District, nuestra próxima Asamblea Anual de Delegados (del 29 al 31 de julio) también será una oportunidad para discutir las implicaciones de la asamblea de MC USA dentro de WDC y nuestras congregaciones.

Mientras tanto, también sigo reflexionando sobre el significado de la asamblea especial de MC USA.

Fue una oportunidad para practicar la conversación honesta, las habilidades de escuchar intencionalmente, la compasión y el conflicto saludable, y la conciencia emocional en presencia de diversas experiencias y perspectivas representadas en la reunión de delegados. Esta experiencia es una invitación a toda la iglesia, a todas las congregaciones, a nutrir estas prácticas espirituales en el futuro. La diversidad es parte de ser la iglesia unida; la forma en que abordamos el conflicto y practicamos la “vida juntos” en medio de nuestras diferencias es una parte clave de nuestro testimonio como seguidores de Jesús.

La asamblea especial también destacó la importancia de abordar los temas de poder, vulnerabilidad y seguridad, y pertenecer al cuerpo de Cristo. Las resoluciones procesadas por los delegados confesaron el daño que se ha hecho a los miembros de la comunidad LGBTQ+ en el pasado y se comprometieron a honrarlos en el futuro; promovió la accesibilidad en la iglesia para personas con discapacidad; y nos llamó a trabajar por la justicia racial y económica dentro del sistema legal penal. Estos son pasos importantes para participar más plenamente en la misión de Dios de shalom en el mundo, mientras luchamos juntos para encarnar la justicia y la integridad en nuestras propias vidas y congregaciones.

Finalmente, en la asamblea observé que un número significante de jóvenes y adultos jóvenes estaban entre los delegados participando en las mesas de diálogo y compartiendo sus comentarios y preguntas. ¡Celebro su presencia! Este es un llamado a abrazar su liderazgo, sabiduría e ideas creativas, para que puedan ser reconocidos como la iglesia de hoy y sean empoderados para dar forma a la iglesia del futuro.

Que el Espíritu Santo guíe a cada congregación en WDC, mientras continuamos discerniendo estas oportunidades para unirnos al trabajo continuo de Dios entre nosotros y en el mundo.
