One of the strange gifts of the ways we have been worshipping God during the pandemic is how many of us have introduced new music.  In normal days, in normal ways, we would maybe have a pianist or guitarist play the melody through once, then invite our congregations to sing and struggle through as we learn to love new tunes little-by-little.  With the Covid danger of spreading the virus more readily by singing, many of our churches have been listening to more recorded music.  It’s been a gift to listen to others who already know the music.  They model it for us and we learn by listening. This is a way to learn new music that many of us might want to carry into our post-Covid church life.

It’s not just new tunes we’re learning in Voices Together.  We’re also being introduced to a rich tapestry of images for God that can be found in scripture.  Some of these are well-known (like Shepherd, Father, or Light) and others are less familiar to us.  Here is a small sample of the diverse images for the Divine found in our new hymnal:

It is my hope and prayer that as we learn some new songs and begin to cherish them, it will enrich our worship, bible study, and devotional life.  Expanding our images for God is so beautiful, because it can help us weave new understandings of the Holy One into our lives.  I hope that Voices Together will be a gift to your congregation and to each of us to strengthen and enrich our spiritual life as we seek to know and be known by the One who loves us.

Tejiendo Imágenes Ricas de Dios en Nuestras Vidas

Uno de los dones extraños es la forma en que hemos estado adorando a Dios durante la pandemia y cuántos de nosotros hemos introducido música nueva. En días normales, de manera normal, tal vez un pianista o guitarrista toque la melodía una vez, luego invitamos a nuestras congregaciones a cantar y luchar mientras aprendemos a amar las nuevas melodías poco a poco. Con el peligro de COVID de propagar el virus más fácilmente cantando, muchas de nuestras iglesias han estado escuchando más música grabada. Ha sido un regalo escuchar a otros que ya conocen la música. Nos lo modelan y aprendemos escuchando. Esta es una forma de aprender música nueva que muchos de nosotros podríamos querer llevar a nuestra vida de iglesia post-COVID.

No solo estamos aprendiendo nuevas melodías en Voices Together. También se nos presenta un rico tapiz de imágenes de Dios que se pueden encontrar en las Escrituras. Algunos de estos son bien conocidos (como Pastor, Padre o Luz) y otros nos son menos familiares. Expandir nuestras imágenes de Dios es muy hermoso, porque puede ayudarnos a tejer una nueva comprensión del Santo en nuestras vidas.
