Prayer Walk Engages Community
A Community Prayer Walk was designed by the Year of the Bible Committee at First Mennonite, Halstead, KS to engage the entire community in praying God’s word. Eight locations were chosen around the town of Halstead and at each location a “prayer stone” was placed. Attached to each stone was a prayer, a related scripture and a short idea for further reading or enrichment. Community members were encouraged to take a walk, bike ride or car ride around town, stop at each location and pray. The prayer walk could be completed all at once or one could also choose one or two locations to do at a time. The prayer stones were available from Mother’s Day to Father’s Day and the prayers were changed at least once. The stones were 12” x 12” concrete paver stones and one member painted each stone with decorative edging. The prayers were laminated then placed in a plastic sleeve and taped shut with clear packing tape to help keep the paper dry. The Prayer Walk was advertised in the local newspaper, in the community church’s bulletins and with brochures available at the library, grocery store and local Neighbors Store, as well as at each church. Positive comments have been received and this project may become an annual event.
