COMMON SCRIPTURE FOR ALL

At the First Mennonite Church (Hutchinson) annual Ministry Team Lunch, Pastor Tonya Ramer Wenger invited each of the eight Ministry Teams to return to Matthew 14 for their devotionals at each of their meetings in the coming year.  Matthew 14 has three stories in it, beginning with the head of John the Baptist on a platter.  That violent and gruesome story is followed by two miracles:  the feeding of the 5,000 and Jesus (& Peter!) walking on the water in the midst of a storm.  In this chapter, Jesus transforms harsh realities with impossible acts of God.  The Ministry Teams were invited to consider these questions throughout the year:  (1) How are we being called – individually or corporately – to share what we have, no matter how small or insignificant it appears?  (2) How are we being called – individually or corporately – to get out of the boat?  To be willing to take some risks, make some changes, enter places that we are afraid of, because we believe Jesus is there and we want to walk with him?
