What do you think of when you hear about stories? Do you think about favorite stories that people in your family or congregation tell and retell? These stories are a treasured part of our history. What about the whispered stories that are passed from one generation to another, but never written down? How do these shape us? Do you think about amazing stories of faith, like those found in the Martyrs’ Mirror or in Prairie People, an account of our own Western District Conference beginnings? What chapters would be added if our WDC story were written down today? Maybe you think of the stories of the faithful found in scripture. These are all stories that shape our faith as individuals and as a people.
These kind of stories—both the troubling and the inspirational—will be told at our hybrid Annual Assembly this year, July 30-August 1. We’ll hear some of the stories of WDC history through preaching, workshops, and storytelling. We’ll be inspired to recall how God was at work in the lives of the earliest followers of Jesus. We’ll be challenged to respond in faith as we hear some stories of Jesus followers in WDC and MC USA churches today.
Michele Hershberger, Bible scholar and wonderful storyteller, will be our preacher Friday evening. You are invited to join us on-site at Faith Mennonite Church, Newton, KS or via our YouTube Live Stream. Graciela Tijerina, pastor of Iglesia Mennonita Casa Betania, will be our Sunday morning preacher, on-site and live streamed.
During the day on Saturday, July 31, hear stories of courage, whether from those facing mental illness or migration challenges, whether reckoning with our settler history or the meaning of Jesus’ death and resurrection, we are a people of stories. We’ll hear some old favorites and maybe learn some new ones at virtual, hybrid and on-site workshops.
Saturday evening, July 31, join us virtually or on-site for some top notch storytellers. Some will be funny. Some will be touching. Some will be biblical. Some will be true and others should be.
All of us who follow Jesus are “Woven into God’s Story.” Our stories become part of the divine Story, whether they are stories of beauty or brokenness or all of that combined. They are our stories of faith.

Nuestras historias son historias de fe
¿En qué piensa cuando escuchas la palabra historias? ¿Piensa en las historias favoritas que las personas de su familia o congregación cuentan y vuelven a contar? Estas historias son una parte preciada de nuestra historia. ¿Qué pasa con las historias susurradas que se transmiten de una generación a otra, pero nunca se escriben? ¿Cómo nos moldea esto? ¿Piensa en historias asombrosas de fe, como las que se encuentran en el Espejo de los Mártires o en Prairie People, un relato de nuestros propios comienzos en la Conferencia del Distrito Oeste? ¿Qué capítulos se agregarían si nuestra historia de WDC se escribiera hoy? Quizás piense en las historias de los fieles que se encuentran en las Escrituras. Todas estas son historias que dan forma a nuestra fe como individuos y como personas.
Este tipo de historias, tanto las preocupantes como las inspiradoras, se contarán en nuestra Asamblea Anual híbrida de este año, del 30 de julio al 1 de agosto. Escucharemos algunas de las historias de la historia de WDC a través de la predicación, los talleres y la narración de historias. Seremos inspirados para recordar cómo Dios estaba obrando en las vidas de los primeros seguidores de Jesús. Seremos desafiados a responder con fe al escuchar algunas historias de seguidores de Jesús en las iglesias de WDC y MC USA hoy.
