When have you felt most alive and vibrant as a congregation, or as a participant of your congregation? What is foundational and reassuring about your congregation that has helped in difficult times? What activities or ministries are most important for your congregation in carrying out God’s work? What do you hope for the future for your congregation, and what resources from WDC and connections with WDC congregations would be helpful for that?
These questions are at the heart of WDC’s recently-launched Listening Process, inviting congregations to host a visit from a WDC listening team during the coming year, for conversation together about these topics. (See https://mennowdc.org/wdc-listening-process/)
The WDC Executive Board is offering the Listening Process in recognition of the numerous changes and challenges impacting our congregations following the COVID pandemic and in the face of complex issues in our world today. Through the Listening Process we seek to empower the vitality of WDC congregations by hearing their stories, cultivating ongoing relationship with one another and with WDC, and discerning resources most relevant to each congregation’s context.
If your congregation signs up to participate in the Listening Process, a three-person volunteer listening team from WDC will arrange to visit for worship and to facilitate a congregational discussion on the four questions, using an Appreciative Inquiry approach. This way of listening invites us to first discover what is most life-giving and valuable, build on that by envisioning what could be, and then create and live into the future we hope for. Another way to describe it is this: As the church we listen together for how Christ is alive and present among us, open ourselves to the fresh movement of the Holy Spirit, and join God’s mission in the world.
In the WDC Listening Process, listening teams will compile responses from small group conversations in congregations, and a report will be shared back to the congregation. WDC will also listen for common themes from across all the congregations that participate, and share a summary report with all congregations. We hope to use what we learn to make connections between congregations with similar initiatives and concerns, and to identify effective ways to support congregations’ current ministries and visions for the future.
It is exciting to be taking our first steps in this ambitious project: Two congregations have already graciously hosted a “pilot” visit from the Listening Process planning team (Wendy Schrag, Doug Penner and me), and several more congregations have indicated their intention to host a listening visit. Over twenty volunteers have accepted invitations to serve on listening teams and receive orientation for that role (and we would welcome additional volunteers to join the listening team pool.) And the WDC Annual Assembly August 11-13 will feature worship and workshops on the theme of listening, preparing us to hear one another’s voices and to hear the voice of God. In our listening, may we be animated with hope, courage and joy to thrive as congregations and as a wider community of faith!

Es emocionante dar nuestros primeros pasos en este ambicioso proyecto: Dos congregaciones ya han organizado gentilmente una visita “piloto” del equipo de planificación del Proceso de Escucha (Wendy Schrag, Doug Penner y yo), y varias congregaciones más han indicado su intención de organizar una visita de escucha. Más de veinte voluntarios han aceptado invitaciones para servir en equipos de escucha y recibir orientación para ese rol (y agradeceríamos voluntarios adicionales para unirse al grupo de equipos de escucha). Y la Asamblea Anual de WDC del 11 al 13 de agosto contará con adoración y talleres sobre el tema de escuchar, preparándonos para escuchar las voces de los demás y escuchar la voz de Dios. ¡Que en nuestro escuchar estemos animados con esperanza, fortaleza y alegría para prosperar como congregaciones y como una comunidad de fe más amplia!
