Early in Spring I sort through my garden seeds, tossing out what is outdated and keeping seeds that might still germinate. I clear away dead plants and left-over weeds from the soil, and then wait anxiously for the greenhouse in my neighborhood to open for the season. When that time arrives, I purchase potatoes, onions, other seeds and vegetable plants, and place them lovingly in the cool earth. Then I water the soft soil and tiny plants, and wait…and water and wait some more… and pull weeds and wait… until finally, there is growth! New seedlings, stems, buds and flowers – and finally, edible leaves and fruit! Fast forward to July: The sweet potato vines are now taking over the flower beds, and I am wondering why I planted so much kale, parsley and basil? And, how did I think I could handle so many tomatoes and peppers?! Now, my efforts go towards harvesting (leaving some for other creatures who have already nibbled on “my” vegetables), and the kitchen counter is filled with garden produce as our household prepares, cooks, eats, and preserves vegetables – and happily shares or exchanges garden produce with other friends and neighbors. I delight in the transformation that has taken place in the garden, and the variety of flavors, textures and beauty that results from that. What joy it is to share in God’s abundance with others around the table!

Preparing for WDC Annual Assembly is a bit like gardening: We review previous assembly experiences; we gather ideas and supplies for the next assembly; we plant the seeds of vision, invitation and anticipation; we work, wait and wonder how it will turn out. Then, fast forward to July: Our time is now filled with registration details, worship plans, delegate agenda, workshops, meal plans, transportation arrangements, and numerous other logistics. And finally, Assembly arrives! We delight in the fruit of our labor and thank the gracious God who gives growth. We celebrate the beauty and diversity of gathering as God’s people, the transforming work that God is doing, and the joy of sharing in the gift of God’s abundance with others at the table!

May it be so, as we gather for WDC Annual Assembly, August 2-4, 2024 in Beatrice, NE. Thank you for your prayers, preparation and participation in this important gathering in the life of our conference.

Jardinería y Reunión

A principios de la primavera, clasifico las semillas de mi jardín, desecho las que están obsoletas y guardo las semillas que aún podrían germinar. Limpio las plantas muertas y las malas hierbas sobrantes del suelo, y luego espero ansiosamente a que el invernadero de mi vecindario abra para la temporada. Cuando llega ese momento, compro papas, cebollas, otras semillas y plantas de vegetales, y las coloco amorosamente en la tierra fresca. Luego riego la tierra blanda y las plantas diminutas, y espero… y riego y esperar un poco más… y arranco las malas hierbas y espero… Hasta que finalmente, ¡hay crecimiento! Nuevas plántulas, tallos, brotes y flores, y finalmente, ¡hojas y frutos comestibles! Avancemos rápido hasta julio: las enredaderas de camote ahora se están apoderando de los arriates de flores, y me pregunto por qué planté tanta col rizada, perejil y albahaca. Y, ¿cómo pensé que podría manejar tantos tomates y pimientos? Ahora, mis esfuerzos se dirigen a la cosecha (dejando algunos para otras criaturas que ya han mordisqueado “mis” verduras), y la mesa de la cocina está llena de productos de la huerta mientras nuestra familia prepara, cocina, come y conserva verduras, y felizmente comparte o intercambia productos de la huerta con otros amigos y vecinos. Me deleito en la transformación que ha tenido lugar en el jardín, y la variedad de sabores, texturas y belleza que resulta de eso. ¡Qué gozo es compartir la abundancia de Dios con los demás alrededor de la mesa!

Prepararse para la Asamblea Anual de WDC es un poco como la jardinería: revisamos las experiencias previas de la asamblea; reunimos ideas y suministros para la próxima asamblea; plantamos las semillas de la visión, la invitación y la anticipación; Trabajamos, esperamos y nos preguntamos cómo resultará. Luego, avancemos hasta julio: nuestro tiempo ahora está lleno de detalles de registro, planes de adoración, agenda de delegados, talleres, planes de comidas, arreglos de transporte y muchos otros aspectos logísticos. Y finalmente, ¡llega la Asamblea! Nos deleitamos en el fruto de nuestro trabajo y damos gracias al Dios misericordioso que da crecimiento. ¡Celebramos la belleza y la diversidad de reunirnos como pueblo de Dios, la obra transformadora que Dios está haciendo y la alegría de compartir el regalo de la abundancia de Dios con otros en la mesa!
