For over 75 years in the community where I live, the local Lions Club has sponsored an all-day pancake feed on election day, as a fundraiser for charitable projects in the community. Our family has the tradition of going to the pancake feed for breakfast before we vote, figuring it will fortify us to carry out our civic duty in the ballot booth! Given the tensions of the election season, eating pancakes with neighbors from our town is also an opportunity to share together in table fellowship and community engagement – a reminder of our common humanity even in the face of our political differences.

As I write this article before the outcome of the election, I am reminded of commitments that fortify us as Anabaptist Christians to live faithfully in today’s world: Regardless of who is elected, we will continue to place our ultimate loyalty and hope in Jesus – not in any politician or president. Even as citizens of a temporary earthly nation-state, we will seek first the reign of God, but not equate that with any particular government, nation or political system. As members of the body of Christ, we will continue to follow Jesus who offers true life and shalom, with justice for those who are oppressed and vulnerable. We will implore those in positions of political power to act for the common good and the wellbeing of creation, and we will also seek to embody that commitment in our daily lives. In the face of political polarization, threats of violence, lies and disinformation, we will speak truth to power, love our enemies, give and receive counsel, and treat others with dignity and compassion. Whether the election results bring a sense of victory or defeat, relief or disappointment, closure or confusion, we will trust that the love of God is greater than bigotry or fear.

Regardless of the election results, let us recommit ourselves to the work of justice, lives of compassion, and courageous faithfulness as followers of Jesus in this complex and beautiful world.
