The Greek philosopher Heraclitus is popularly quoted as saying “There is nothing permanent except change.” Too often we resist change, we wish for the good old days and long for the old familiar ways of doing things. I hope we realize that change can be good! As our communities, congregations, and our culture changes, we wrestle with how the church should (or should not) change in response (or resistance) to these shifts. Part of my job as the director of the WDC Resource Library, is to pay attention to needs and trends and to be responsive to them. That sometimes, perhaps more accurately often, requires change!
The Resource Library started in 1936 with primarily German-language resources. Over time the collection shifted to English and then added Spanish-language materials. The collection used to be housed on the Bethel College campus and then moved across the street to the 2500 Place building in North Newton where it is currently located. Several years ago we established a satellite collection of Spanish-language materials housed in Texas as well. During WWII the library sent boxes of books to young men doing alternate service in Civilian Public Service camps across the country. Today we send boxes of books to congregations to extend church libraries, highlight a special theme, or process a particular issue. Early in 2020 the library launched the Book Bundles program with multiple copies of a single title for groups to study together. For many many years, the library hosted a preschool story hour, now with the shift to more working parents, we have summer story days that invite families/households to engage stories, learning, and growth together. All of these programs and services have shifted as our daily realities have changed.
We are blessed to have a solid basis of print materials and DVDs in the physical library that has been cultivated for decades by several gifted librarians; however, the reality is that we live in an instant world and people living hundreds of miles away may not think of the library and take the time (or even have the time) to request materials and then wait for them to come in the mail. In order to best serve everyone from Guatemala to Nebraska, digital resources are important!
Starting November 1, you can use your WDC Resource Library card to check out ebooks and audiobooks on any mobile device or desktop computer. We have almost 300 items available including Anabaptist titles from Herald Press, the Believer’s Church Bible Commentaries, children’s books, devotionals, and more! Is there something else you’d like to see? Feel free to request it!
An underused resource in the library collection is StudyGateway. The library has an account that you can join to access hundreds of digital streaming Bible studies, topical studies, and even kids videos! Let me know at crlib@mennowdc.org if you’d like to join the group.
There’s been a lot of changes in the 88-year history of the WDC Resource Library (even its name! We still have a few books stamped “WDC Loan Library”). These changes range from location, to how we access resources, changes in the types of resources available, to changes in how WDC spends our financial resources. The changes don’t end here. We will continue to seek to remove barriers to access at the library. There will also be things we need to figure out as we move forward in this specific season of change, but it is all in the hope that together these resources will help us all Witness & invite others to faith in Jesus Christ, Dwell in just & loving relationships, and Connect to God’s mission in the world.
Now, this is change to really get excited about!

Cambios con los que Puede Entusiasmarse
El filósofo griego Heráclito es popularmente citado diciendo: “No hay nada permanente excepto el cambio”. Con demasiada frecuencia nos resistimos al cambio, deseamos los buenos viejos tiempos y añoramos las viejas formas familiares de hacer las cosas. ¡Espero que nos demos cuenta de que el cambio puede ser bueno! A medida que nuestras comunidades, congregaciones y nuestra cultura cambian, luchamos con cómo la iglesia debería (o no debería) cambiar en respuesta (o resistencia) a estos cambios. Parte de mi trabajo como directora de la Biblioteca de Recursos de WDC es prestar atención a las necesidades y tendencias y responder a ellas. ¡Que a veces, tal vez más exactamente a menudo, requiere un cambio!
La Biblioteca de Recursos comenzó en 1936 con recursos principalmente en alemán. Con el tiempo, la colección cambió al inglés y luego agregó materiales en español. Ha habido muchos cambios en los 88 años de historia de la Biblioteca de Recursos de WDC (¡incluso su nombre! Todavía tenemos algunos libros con el sello “WDC Loan Library”).
