I know it’s only mid-November, but already we’re making plans at my house for Advent. Anyone who has young children in their lives knows that the anticipation of Christmas is huge. Several Christmas lists have already been written and shared, and yes, we ordered our matching Christmas jammies since the kiddo no longer fits in the ones from the last couple of years. But we’ve also selected our Advent family devotional. It’s far too easy to get wrapped up in the gift giving, the Christmas parties, and the general excitement of the season. Sometimes it’s harder to get the entire family excited about the waiting part, but that time of waiting helps form our faith in beautiful ways. As we wait for Christmas Day, we can explore the dead areas of our lives—those places that need Christ’s loving, healing presence. As we wait, we can celebrate the gifts we already have—the gifts of family and time together, the gifts of our church families and communities of support.
In our household, we explore the ideas of faith, the idea of waiting on Christ, as well as the gifts of family and time together by sharing a family Advent devotional. We have dozens of options available at the Resource Library, both for families as well as individuals or households without children. Another way we mark the countdown to Christ’s birth is by “unwrapping” a Christmas story to read together every night. This tradition started our daughter’s first Christmas when she was just 9 months old and has continued ever since. We snuggle up together either by the Christmas tree or sitting on her bed to share a story about the first Christmas, caring and sharing love at Christmas, or a silly story celebrating joy. To make our tradition more sustainable, I made some simple bags with clearance Christmas fabric a few years ago that can be reused. My daughter is so excited to find the stack of bright fabric-wrapped books that appear overnight Dec. 1. If this is a tradition your family does, or would like to start, the Resource Library can help with that! At last count, we had 236 Christmas children’s books just waiting to go home with you and get wrapped up for special moments for your family! Just be sure to remember which packages are library books so they are opened and returned before they are due. 🙂 We also have a selection of Christmas books looking for permanent new homes. Tradiciones de Adviento
Sé que solo estamos a mediados de noviembre, pero ya estamos haciendo planes en mi casa para el Adviento. Cualquiera que tenga niños pequeños en su vida sabe que la anticipación de la Navidad es enorme. Ya se han escrito y compartido varias listas navideñas, y sí, ya pedimos nuestras piyamas navideñas ya que la niña ya no cabe en las de los dos últimos años. Pero también hemos seleccionado nuestro devocional familiar de Adviento. Es demasiado fácil dejarse llevar por la entrega de regalos, las fiestas navideñas y la emoción general de la temporada. A veces es más difícil entusiasmar a toda la familia con la parte de la espera. Pero ese tiempo de espera ayuda a formar nuestra fe de maneras hermosas. Mientras esperamos el día de Navidad, podemos explorar las áreas muertas de nuestras vidas, aquellos lugares que necesitan la presencia amorosa y sanadora de Cristo. Mientras esperamos, podemos celebrar los dones que ya tenemos: los dones de la familia y el tiempo juntos, los dones de las familias de nuestra iglesia y las comunidades de apoyo.
En nuestro hogar, exploramos las ideas de la fe, la idea de esperar en Cristo, así como los dones de la familia y el tiempo juntos al compartir un devocional de Adviento familiar. Otra forma en que marcamos la cuenta regresiva para el nacimiento de Cristo es “Abriendo” un cuento de Navidad para leer juntos todas las noches. Esta tradición comenzó la primera Navidad de nuestra hija cuando tenía solo 9 meses y ha continuado desde entonces. Nos acurrucamos juntos, ya sea junto al árbol de Navidad o sentados en su cama para compartir una historia sobre la primera Navidad, o compartir el amor en Navidad, o una historia tonta que celebra la alegría. Para hacer más sostenible nuestra tradición, hace unos años hice unas sencillas bolsas con tela navideña en liquidación que se pueden reutilizar. Mi hija está muy emocionada de encontrar el montón de libros envueltos en tela brillante que aparecen durante la noche del 1 de diciembre.
