Lately, when I’ve tried to talk about Kids Meet Christ (KMC), I hear people say, “But, we only have a couple kids or we have no children. This isn’t for us.” May I challenge that assumption?
Assumption 1: We only have children among us when our grandkids come to visit.
Challenge: Great! So you do have children sometimes. What associations do you want them to have with practicing faith in community? Attending a KMC gathering may be a creative way to start a conversation about imagining worship through the eyes and ears of a child.
Assumption 2: If we have no children in worship regularly, we can keep everything the way it is now.
Challenge: The way many people (including adults) take in information today is in bite-sized chunks. If we don’t talk together about communication trends and how we might want to shape some parts of worship to respond to this, our congregations may be seen as obsolete.
KMC invites us all to take a fresh look at which aspects of worship are life-giving as they are and which the Holy Spirit might be calling us to our worship patterns. Which parts of worship are life-giving? Which could use some fresh winds of the Spirit? Bear in mind, too, that what helps children focus, may help our older folks, too.
Assumption 3: We have Children’s Time. That’s how we engage kids during worship.
Challenge: What about the rest of the worship service? Could sermons become more story-driven, so all ages could listen and understand? Could at least half of the congregational songs be simpler–simple to learn and sing together? Could children be invited to sit near the front where they can see and here?
Kids Meet Christ is about worship that makes space for kids, and in doing that, it makes space for all of us! Really, Kids Meet Christ is ultimately about intergenerational worship, so generations can worship God together in ways that speak to all of us.

Últimamente, cuando he tratado de hablar sobre Kids Meet Christ (KMC), escucho a la gente decir: “Pero, solo tenemos un par de niños o no tenemos niños. Esto no es para nosotros”. ¿Puedo cuestionar esa suposición?

Desafío: ¡Genial! Así que a veces tiene niños. ¿Qué asociaciones quiere que tengan con la práctica de la fe en comunidad? Asistir a una reunión de KMC puede ser una forma creativa de iniciar una conversación sobre como imaginar el culto a través de los ojos y los oídos de un niño.
Suposición 2: Si no tenemos niños en el culto regularmente, podemos mantener todo como está ahora.
Desafío: La forma en que muchas personas (incluidos los adultos) asimilan la información hoy en día es en trozos pequeños. Si no hablamos juntos sobre las tendencias de comunicación y cómo podríamos querer dar forma a algunas partes del culto para responder a esto, nuestras congregaciones pueden ser vistas como obsoletas.
KMC nos invita a todos a considerar con una nueva perspectiva que aspectos del culto son vivificantes tal como son y qué el Espíritu Santo podría estar llamándonos a incorporar a nuestras costumbres de culto. ¿Qué partes del culto dan vida? ¿A cuál le vendrían bien un soplo de aire frescos del Espíritu? Tenga en cuenta también que lo que ayuda a los niños a concentrarse, también puede ayudar a nuestros mayores.
Suposición 3: Tenemos el tiempo para los niños. Así es como involucramos a los niños durante el culto.
Desafío: ¿Qué pasa con el resto del culto? ¿Podrían los sermones volverse más basados en la historia, para que todas las edades pudieran escuchar y entender? ¿Podrían al menos la mitad de los cantos de la congregación ser más simples, fáciles de aprender y cantar juntos? ¿Se podría invitar a los niños a sentarse cerca del frente, donde puedan ver y oír?
Kids Meet Christ se trata del culto que hace espacio para los niños, y al hacerlo, ¡hace espacio para todos nosotros! En realidad, Kids Meet Christ se trata en última instancia del culto intergeneracional, para que las generaciones puedan adorar a Dios juntas de manera que nos hablen a todos.
