As the Stewardship Commission has encouraged a more member-owned approach to sustaining our shared WDC ministry, we are asking each member congregation to identify a WDC Advocate. A WDC Advocate serves as an additional connection between the congregation and the conference—sharing conference news, highlighting available resources, and helping members understand and engage with the ministry we share together. The spirit of this request is that if we’re inviting congregations and individuals to contribute financially, it’s important that they also know what they’re supporting.
Over the past six months as I’ve visited several member churches and communicated with representatives from many others, I’ve been recognizing another tremendous benefit of having a WDC Advocate at your church: WDC has some incredibly helpful resources that many people are missing out on because they just weren’t aware these resources existed. We do our best to advertise, of course, but so often people don’t get the newsletters or read the facebook posts or internalize the brief message in the bulletin as they scan it on Sunday morning. Sometimes, in order for people to be aware of the resources available, you have to just share about it in person, and that’s what WDC Advocates will do- through occasional mission moments, church announcements, or brief one-on-one conversations with folks they think may be interested.
To illustrate what I mean, here are a few comments I’ve heard from members over the past couple of months:
From an active leader in a member church in an initial one-on-one conversation:
“I have never heard about WDC’s Kids Meet Christ Program and it sounds like exactly what we need. I work with the youth at our church and feel like all faith formation materials I know about are really outdated. I’d love to learn more!”
From a member of a congregation far from the North Newton area:
“I honestly forgot WDC had a resource library- much less digital options. I’ll have to check that out.”
From someone who currently gives to WDC in addition to their church’s contribution:
“I’m so thankful you came and spoke to our church today. I don’t think most people here understand why we’re a part of Western District Conference and I think this gave them a much better picture of what we do. Now that they know more, I hope they’ll get more involved!”
The resources referenced above are only a sampling of what WDC provides, and I’d almost guarantee that there are people you sit next to each Sunday who aren’t aware of them. In conclusion, whether or not you or your church contributes financially to WDC, I encourage your congregation to identify a WDC Advocate. Don’t let members of your congregation miss out on these helpful resources! If you don’t know if your church has identified a WDC Advocate yet, ask your pastor or church leader. Para ilustrar lo que quiero decir, aquí hay algunos comentarios que he escuchado de los miembros en los últimos meses:
De un líder activo en una iglesia miembro en una conversación inicial individual:
“Nunca había oído hablar del programa Los Niños Conocen a Cristo (KMC)de WDC y parece justo lo que necesitamos. Trabajo con los jóvenes de nuestra iglesia y siento que todos los materiales de formación en la fe que conozco están muy desactualizados. ¡Me encantaría saber más!”
De un miembro de una congregación alejada del área de North Newton:
“Sinceramente, había olvidado que WDC tenía una biblioteca de recursos, y mucho menos opciones digitales. Tendré que echarle un vistazo.”
De alguien que actualmente dona a WDC además de la contribución a su iglesia:
“Le agradezco mucho que haya venido hoy a hablar a nuestra iglesia. No creo que la mayoría de los presentes entienda por qué formamos parte de Western District Conference, y pienso que esto les ha dado una idea mucho más clara de lo que hacemos. Ahora que saben más, ¡espero que se involucren más!”
Los recursos mencionados anteriormente son solo una muestra de lo que ofrece WDC, y casi podría garantizar que hay personas sentadas a tu lado cada domingo que no los conocen. En conclusión, independientemente de si usted o su iglesia contribuyen económicamente a WDC o no, animo a su congregación a que identifique a un defensor de WDC. ¡No dejes que los miembros de tu congregación se pierdan estos útiles recursos!
