CHURCH EXPERIENCES THE JEWISH FESTIVAL OF BOOTHS

“Build a booth!” were the directions given to all Sunday School classes at Zion Mennonite Church (Elbing, KS) prior to Sunday, August 16. All sorts of activity and ruckus ensued during our education hour that day, but by worship time there were booths upstairs and downstairs and even in the sanctuary. As our worship started children walked in waving lulav’s and lemons and did a Jewish dance; this began a service which helped us experience and better understand the Jewish Festival of Booths (or “Sukkot”). At the close of worship all were invited to tour the booths, sampling the treats which each offered, fellowshipping together, and testifying to God’s provision and guidance in our lives.

For more background, read the instructions in Leviticus 23:33-43 given to the Israelites as they settled in Canaan, or check out how Jesus celebrated this festival in John 7.
